Using the New Jersey Unemployment Insurance Website

If you happen to be in a situation where you need to use the State of New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development to receive unemployment benefits, you are better suited using their website to handle certain actions rather than going to one of their government office and waiting for hours to receive any kind of help. That being the case, the following guide will discuss the various menu options available at and what each of them actually mean to someone filing for or receiving unemployment insurance from New Jersey.

For every one of the menu options discussed in this guide, to complete the action after following the first link, you are going to have to scroll to the bottom of the page and click the continue button. In some cases, this will then take you to another page which you must do the same thing or you will be taken directly to the log in page for the service.

File or Reopen Your UI Claim

This is where you are going to have to go if you need to get your unemployment insurance activated either for the first time or reopened after a period of account inactivity. When filing for payments due to unemployment for the first time, you will need a few things available like your driver’s license number, your SSN or Alien Registration Documentation from USCIS, your bank information if you want direct deposit and all of your employer information from the last 18 months.

Additionally, there are a few other things that you cannot have applicable to your file to be able to file this claim online (in other words, if any of the following things apply to you, you will have to apply for unemployment insurance (UI) by calling your regional Reemployment Call Center, for which I will post the numbers shortly). So, to apply online, all of your work for the past 18 months has to have taken place inside the state of New Jersey, you can’t have worked for the federal government, military or have been a maritime employee for the last 18 months, and you have to live inside the state of New Jersey.

If any of those disqualify you from filing your claim online, you are going to have to call one of the following numbers based on where you live inside or out of New Jersey.

Those who live in the Northeast of the state will want to call the Union City office at (201) 601-4100. People from the Northwest or Central New Jersey will have to call the Freehold office at (732) 761-2020. The Cumberland office, which is for residents of Southern New Jersey, can be reached by dialing (856) 507-2340. And, for those of you who live outside of the state of New Jersey but still need to file for unemployment through this state for whatever reason, you are going to have to get in touch with the Out-of-State Department of Labor and Workforce Development office at (888) 795-6672. Claim Your Weekly Benefits

If you are confirmed to receive unemployment benefits from New Jersey, you can follow this link to submit the information required by the state to have your unemployment sent out. As is posted in big red letters across this portion of the site, it is illegal to claim full unemployment if you are currently working. However, it is also important to note that any income claimed must be claimed when it is actually earned rather than when you receive the paycheck itself. That being the case, if you happen to still be receiving checks for a job you were laid off from, you can still receive unemployment benefits for this week.

Claim Status

If you have recently filed for unemployment insurance or reopened your case with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, you can follow this link to determine where your claim currently is in the process at this time. This will allow you to determine whether or not you will be receiving your unemployment payments in a timely manner.

When following this link to determine your claim status, make sure to have your login information available as well as either your current UI claim PIN, your driver’s license or your state identification card.

Add/Change Your Direct Deposit

This is the link you are going to have to follow if you need to change which bank account your unemployment insurance benefit payments are being sent to. When following this link to do this, you are going to need either your driver’s license, state ID card or UI PIN available.

For those of you who would like to stop direct deposit of your unemployment payments and start using the state’s unemployment insurance debit card instead, you will actually want to download the BC-502 (which is the Authorization for Benefit Payment by Direct Deposit or Debit Card), fill it out and mail it in to the NJ Dept of Labor and Workforce Development. You will be able to get the address from the form itself.

Address/Telephone Number Change

You will follow this link on the main menu of the UI web page to change your personal contact information for your account. To actually submit the change of address or telephone number, you are going to need a valid New Jersey driver’s license or identification card – if you don’t have either of these available to use, you will have to have available your PIN from the UI benefit claim otherwise you will not be able to complete this action.

Just so you know, if you already have an active claim in their system, your address will take a full day to change. Also, you should know that you can only use the website to change your address to another address in the state of New Jersey. If you happen to need to change your contact address to one that is outside of New Jersey, you are going to have to call their helpline at  (888) 795-6672 or select to “Report a new address” on the form when you are claiming your weekly unemployment payments.

View/Print 1099-G Tax Statement

As this link states, you will be able to look at or print a copy of your 1099-G tax statement. However, that does not really give much information about what that is or what you would use it for. The 1099-G is a form from which data is taken and placed on to your end of the year tax forms for both federal and state filing.

The information that you will be able to find on this form may be of some use to you personally as well, and it includes how much unemployment insurance you received through the previous year, how much disability was paid to you by the state (DDU or Disability During Unemployment), how much paid family leave you got, data about any trade readjustment allowance you were given and also anything you may have received from disaster unemployment assistance.

Each of these points of data will be entered on your tax forms in the numbers provided. To receive yours on the New Jersey UI website, you will first have to log in.

    I have returned to work but cannot locate where on you menu the sitr or link that indicates how to report this information. I have filed for unemployment but as I’ve said, I’ve return to full time employment and s your website seems to provide no information as how to let the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce development know this I’ll refrain from attempting to contact you.
